13、Say you’re sitting around with some friends playing video games and someone mentions a game that happens to be one of your favorites. “Oh, that game’s easy. So not worth the time,” one of your friends says. The others agree. Although you enjoy the game quite a lot, not wanting to argue with them, you go along with the crowd.

You have just experienced what is commonly referred to as peer pressure, also called peer influence. You will (同伴压力)adopt a certain type of behavior, dress, or attitude in order to be accepted as part of a

group of your “peers”. As a teen, you are likely to have experienced the effect of peer pressure in a number of different areas.

We are all influenced by our peers at any age. For teens, as school and other activities take you away from home, you may spend more time with your friends than with your family. As you become more independent, your peers naturally play a greater role in your life.

According to Dr. Casey from Cornell University, teens are very quick and accurate in making decisions on their own and in situations where they have time to think. However, when they make decisions in the heat of the moment or in social situations, their decisions are often influenced by factors like peers. In a recent study, teen volunteers played a video driving game, either alone or with friends watching. The researchers discovered that the number of risks teens took more than doubled when their friends were watching, compared with when they played alone. This shows that teens may find it more difficult to control risky behavior when their friends are around, or in situations where they are extremely angry. Just as people can influence us to make unwise choices, they can also influence us to make good ones. A teen might join in a volunteer project because his or her friends are doing it, or get good grades because his or her friends think getting good grades is important. In fact, friends often encourage each other to study, or try out for sports. While we are always influenced by those around us, the decision to act or not is up to us. So when it comes to decision

making, the choice is up to you.

1.According to the passage, Dr. Casey probably agrees that teens ____________. A.like to play driving games with their friends B.prefer situations where they have time to think C.may take more risks when their friends are around D.are slow in making decisions when they are on their own

2.The words “in the heat of the moment” in Paragraph 4 probably mean “_________”. A.when teens avoid possible risks B.when teens trust their judgment

C.when teens lose control over their anger D.when teens give consideration to situations 3.What can we learn from the passage?

A.Teens are eager to be different from their peers. B.Peer pressure has effects on both teens and adults. C.Peer pressure does more harm than good to teens. D.Tees think it challenging to get good grades at school. 4.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A.Peer Pressure: Is It Necessary to Deal with It? B.Peer Pressure: Is It Possible to Get Away from It? C.Peer Pressure: Its Benefits to Teens and Friend Making D.Peer Pressure: Its Influence on Teens and Decision Making

14、Learning to love reading

Taking public transportation in the United States, you can often see people reading books on their way to school or work. But in China, I rarely (很少地) see people reading during their free time.

Are people’s attitudes toward reading different here? Not really. Data (数据) released by Amazon China in December 2017 show that Chinese people still read a lot. They simply prefer e-books over regular books.

However, other data show that reading is still more popular in the us than in China. Is there a reason for this difference? I’m not sure. What I do know is that China has a rich history of literature (文学). From classic novels like Romance of the Three Kingdoms (《三国演义》) to the modern science-fiction books The Three-Body Problem (《三体》), and many other styles, Chinese authors have created many fantastic written works.

Perhaps the difference starts from childhood. Reading textbooks and doing homework can make you feel quite tired. By the time you finish it, you might not feel like reading for fun. Chinese students definitely (肯定) have to read more and

do more homework than US students. So it’s no wonder that they might not want to read much in their spare time. But learning to love reading can be great. Reading can open doors to places, people and ideas that you cannot imagine. Even just a single book has the power to change your own personal beliefs and attitudes. Where will your next book take you?

1.From Paragraph 1, what do we know about people in the US? A.Most people take public transportation to work. B.Students have homework to do on their way to school. C.Many of them have the habit of reading.

D.They read books that are left behind on public transportation.

2.Chinese authors have created many fantastic written works including ________. A.classic novels C.realistic novels

A.Chinese people’s attitudes toward reading have changed. B.Chinese people prefer e-books to regular books now. C.Chinese people never read in their spare time.

D.Chinese people bought the most books from Amazon China in 2017. 4.Why is reading less popular in China, according to the author? A.Because Chinese people prefer to watch plays instead of reading. B.Because it’s hard to choose what to read.

C.Because Chinese people already read enough books during their childhoods. D.Because People’s childhood experiences may influence their reading habits. 5.According to the author, reading books can ________. A.help you learn more about schoolwork C.make you feel tired

B.take too much of your time D.change your view of the world

18、 You may have been told before not to be afraid of anything. Fear is often associated with weakness. Fear is something to be avoided.

But that’s not true, according to Time For Kids magazine. Fear can be good for us.

Fear tells us about danger. Without fear, we wouldn’t know to run away from a tiger or step back from a cliff. In a study published in the Justice Quarterly journal in August, researchers from Michigan State University said that a healthy fear of crime keeps teenagers away from potentially(潜在地) dangerous people, places, and activities.

Fear makes us jump, scream and sweat. But interestingly, sometimes we make ourselves feel fear on purpose. Think about scary books and movies, and also the long lines for a scary roller coaster ride.

Margee Kerr, a US sociologist, explained why to Time For Kids.

Fear fills our brain with healthy chemical substances (化学物质), especially endorphins (内啡肽) and dopamine (多巴胺), and these things create feelings of happiness and excite us, according to Kerr.

In addition, when you’re scared, your body produces a chemical which helps people bond with each other. “Watch people walking out of a haunted house, and you’ll see lots of smiles and high fives,” Kerr told Time For Kids. That also explains why schools and companies organize challenging trips and physical activities to build up team spirit.

People experience and deal with fear in different ways. If you happen to be a “coward” who gets scared easily, don’t worry. There is some evidence that being scared can help a person manage stressful situations.

Kerr said that things like giving a report in front of your class or performing in a school play help build a sort of endurance (忍耐力) to fear that makes us more confident.

“You become more comfortable with the physical experience of fear, and so you’re better able to work through it during tense situations,” said Kerr.

So learn to love your fear. It only grows when we forget how helpful our fear is trying to be. 1.Why is a scary roller coaster ride helpful to people according to the article?

A.It improves people’s ability to survive in the modern world. B.It makes people less cowardly and more confident in life.

C.It causes the brain to produce chemicals that make people happy and excited. D.It teaches people how to keep away from things that could be dangerous.

2.The underlined phrase “bond with” in Paragraph 8 is closest in meaning to ________. A.get closer to C.pay attention to

B.fight against D.be more careful with

3.What is the right attitude toward fear according to the article?

A.Avoid being involved in scary situations. B.Experience it as often as possible. C.Consider it as a sign of weakness. . 4.How do schools build up team spirit? A.By organizing school trips B.By organizing indoor activities

C.By asking students to go into a haunted house D.By organizing challenging trips and physical activities 5.What's the passage mainly about? A.people's misunderstandings about fear B.Different ways to deal with fear. C.The advantages that fear brings us D.A new study about fear Ⅴ.书面表达
