How to improve college student’s English speaking ability
As is known to us all, English is the most widely used language in the whole wide world , and with the openning-up China, English is becoming more and more important and necessary，nowadays, English means opportunity and power , especially to us college students. While somehow for some reason , which may due to the passive teaching methods and lack of emotional climate of learning situation , our English speaking ability is very poor. As a college student , and a English major student , I think, there are three ways to improve our English speaking ability.
Firstly, practise more. “Practice makes perfect”, we should grab every opportunity to practise our oral English , this is even more neccecary when we are facing with the fact that the english speaking surrounding around us is quite needy. To start with , we should practise after class ,we cannot only rely on the poor little class time and after all, there are plenty of spare time for us since we are in college. As to my situation, I usually watch English movies and copy their accents, sometimes I read after the titles, it’s really helpful. And singing with an English song does some good ,too. But, this is not enough, mostly important is that we need to speak more in class. Some research shows that because of low and uneven participation during class time, college sutudents tend to poor at speaking English. Nowadays, English teachers are mainly using English to teach so as to arouse our intrests in English,
So we should take full advantage of class time to speak, communicate as much
as we can. So we should practise more in and after class and alwasys carry on never give up.
Secondly , create a good English surrounding . Most students contribute their poor speaking skills to the lack of climate of english speaking situation, and complains they don’t have the chance to speak with English speakers. This is true , but if we do our best ,we can create our own good learning environment . For example, we can chose a long-time english speaking partner, and with this partner ,English is the only tool allowed to communicate with.If we practise a lot , the two of us will make great progress , it’s a two win theory. There also other suggestions that we only speak English at our dormitory or even in classroom.I think , if we do so, the learning of English will become more interesting and welcoming , with the high enthusiasm, we surely will become a master of speaking English. In other ways, it’s also essential for the college to create a good learning environment. Most schools have English corner where students can only speak English with each other , and there they have the chance to speak with foreign teachers. But it do have a lot of shortcomings, like there are always very few foreign teachers there ,and with a lot of students surrounding them, you have little chance to speak with them. Most impottant is that , it is not a study palce to us but rahter a niosy street where everyone are yelling to sell vegetables.In my opinion, college should create a English speaking environment which is more wided and larger where everyone is participating and has the chance to speak. With the corporation of college and oueselves we can create a new English speaking “world”.
Finally, combine our speaking ability with writing, reading,and
listenningabilities. These four English abilities are closely connnected with each other. Without anyone of them , there would be no ability at all. So in order to improve our English speaking ability , it’s impottant for us to take great efforts to practice our writing, reading ,and listenning.For instance, we can writing while speaking, or listenning while speaking ,try to do two things a time , you will benefit a lot . With the improvement of other three abilities, we will have a great progerss in speaking. Beasides, it’s also suggested that we have a large vocabulary. Although college students have accumulated a certain extent words when we enter college, we still can’t use words freely and most of us are lack of words. Due to poor vocabulary, we often find it hard to express ourselves and pause a lot during conversation. So we need to large our vocabulary , read more, write often and listen frequently.
To conclude, learning English is like making a big building, we need to put in a lot of time, and be patient. Rome was not built in a day . Speaking , as a main part of the building , needs lots of practice .And in order to complete the building, we have to conbine reading ,writing and listenning and have a lot of bricks----words . As long as we comand a good knowledge of English and practise more ,and with the good English learning environment created positively by college and students, the English speaking ability of college students is bound to be improved greatly.
