Why India's Pink City' is a Photographer's Heaven

The city of Jaipur is one of India's w onders. It 31 some of the country's most decorative royal palaces-elegant structures designed hundreds of years ago that still attract visitors today. Largely built in the 1700s, Jaipur is surrounded by a city w all and several 32 castles. Considered as a commercial center, it w as ahead of its time due to the use of grid iron ( 网 格状) city plann ing.

A romantic dusty pink type-w hich has 33 the city since 1876, after it w as painted pink tow el come Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert-g ives Jaipur its 34 as the \"Pink City \". This 35 beauty is w hat first brought Hong Kong-based photographers Victor Cheng and Samantha Wong to Jaipur.

Walk ing in g lass skyscrapers for century-old royal palaces and historic castles, the pair-w ho have 130,000 Instagram follow ers betw een them-said that the images they 36 in Jaipur received a lot of response online. \"A lot of our follow ers hadn't seen this side of India, so w e're happy w e w ere able to show this side of the country.\" Cheng said.

For the photographers, one of the city's most fascinating features is the light p ink color ing of its build ings. ―The first gate you see w hen you enter are pink,‖ said Wong. ―Once you‘re through, everything around you varies in different 37 of the color -from bright pinks to reddish brow ns.\"

Concerns about the harm caused bu ―too much‖ screen time—particularly w hen it is spent on social media—are w idespread. But w orking out w hat a ―healthy‖ 41 might be is far from easy.

Some negative experiences on social med ia— like 42 how your appearance compares to others—do affect some children. How ever, this does not mean that technology use in 43 is harmful and it is difficult to make claims about how it w ill affect different people.

Consider the picture painted by a UNICEF review of existing research into the effects of dig ital technology on children‘s 44 comforts, including happ iness, mental health and

social life. Rather than stating that social med ia w as harmful, it suggested a more 45 effect.

The UNICEF report highlighted a 2017 stuady that examined 120,000 UK 15-year-olds. Among those teenagers w ho w ere the lightest users, it w as found that increasing the time spent

comfort—possibly because it w as important for using technology w as linked to 46 keeping up friendships. 47 , among the heaviest users of technology, any increase in time w as linked to low er levels of comfort. Overall, the UNICEF study suggested that some screen time could be good for children‘s mental health.

A broader look at ev idence provid ed by some other high quality studies again suggests the story is not 48 . An early study in 2013 looked at how the televison and video game habits of 11,000 UK f ive-year-olds affected them tw o years later. It is one of few studies actually 49 the effects of technology over time. It suggested that, compared w ith children w ho w atched one hour of televison or less on a w eekday, a small increase in conduct problems w as seen among those w ho w atched more than three hours each day. Playing electronic games, how ever, w as not seen as leading to a greater 50 of friendship or emotional problems. So how much time should our children spend looking at screens? It is difficult to be 51 as different peop;e spend time online in such different w ays. A useful comparison might be w ith sugar. Broadly speak ing, people 52 that too much sugar can be bad for your health. But the effect it might have can depend on many factors, from the type of sugar to the person and the amount. We w ould not 53 trust anyone w ho claims to predict how someone is affected by consuming one gram of sugar. The same could be said for 54 usage: the outcomes depend on so many factors that only very 55 predictions are possible.

All across America, students are anxiously finishing their \"What I Want To Be ..\" college applicationessays, advised to focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineer ing, and Mathemat ics) by experts and parents w ho insist that's the only w ay to become w orkforce ready. But tw o recent studies of w orkplace success contradict the traditional w isdom about \"hard skills\".

Google orig inally set its hiring systems to sort for computer science students w ith top grades from top science universities. In 2013, Google decided to test its hiring theory by quickly dealing w ith large amounts hiring, firing, and promotion data collected since the company's establishment.

Project Oxygen shocked everyone by concluding that, among the eight most important qualit ies ofGoogle's top employees, STEM capability comes in dead last. The seven top characteristics of success atGoogle are all soft skills : being a good coach; communicating and listening w ell; possessing comprehensioninto others, being supportive of one's colleagues; being a good critical th inker and problem solver, and beingable to make connections across complex ideas.

Those characteristics sound more like w hat one gains as an English or theater major than as a programmer.Could it be that top Google employees w ere succeeding despite their technical train ing, not because ofit? After bringing in more experts to dive even deeper into the data, the company enlarged its previous hiringpractices to include humanit ies majors, artists, and even the MBAs (Master of Business Adm inistration).

Project Aristotle, a study released by Goog le this past spring, further supports the importance of soft skillseven in h igh-tech environments. Project Aristotle analyzes data on inventive and productive teams. Googletakes pride in its A-teams, assembled w ith top scientists, each w ith the most specialized know ledg e and ab le tothrow dow n one creative idea after another. Its data analys is revealed, how ever, that the company's mostimportant and productive new ideas come

8

from B-teams comprised of employees w ho don't alw ays have to bethe smartest people in the room.

Project Aristotle show s that the best teams at Google exhib it a range of soft skills: equality, generosity, curiosity tow ard the ideas of your teammates, understanding, and emotional intelligence. And topping the list:emot ional safety. To succeed, each and every team member must feel confident speaking up and makingmistakes. They must know they are being heard.

STEM skills are vit al to the w orld w e liv e in today, but technology alone, as Steve Jobs famously insisted,is not enough. We desperately need those w ho are educated to the human, cultural, and social as w ell as thecomputational.

63. The underlined w ord:―contradict‖most probably means ―

A. determine w hat makes a w orkplace-ready student B. check w hether its hiring system serves the purpose C. prove soft skills are more important than hard ones D. impress its competitors w ith the employees‘ excellence

65. What can be inferred from Project Aristotle?

A. Emotional safety enables people to express themselves freely. B. Listen ing and hearing helps develop problem-solv ing ab ilities. C. Learn ing from mistakes doesn‘t necessarily mean improvement. D. Those w ithout specialized know ledge can also make inventions. 66. Which of the follow ing is the best title for the passage?

A. STEM skills our society needs for better education

B. The principal focus students have on application essays

Section C

Directions: Read the f ollowing passage. Fill in each blank with a proper senten ce given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need. A. The sensors on a fully self-driv ing car require special care. B. Orduña w ouldn't reveal exactly how they're w ashing the vehicles.

C. The most advanced cars on the planet require an old-fashioned handw ashing.

D. Meanw hile, some companies, such as Cruise, are building sensor clean ing equipment into their vehicles. E. There are a range of problems w ith putting a self-driving vehic le through a traditional car w ash, experts say. F. A self-driving vehic le's exterior needs to be cleaned even more frequently than a typical car because t he sensors must remain free of obstructions.

Car w ashes have been automated for decades, but companies developing fully autonomous

9

vehicles must rely on a human touch to keep their cars and trucks in w orking condition.

67 For example, soap residue or w ater spots could effectively \"b lind \" an autonomous car. A traditional car w ash's heavy brushes could jar the vehicle's sensors, disrupting their calibrat ion and accuracy. Even w orse, sensors, w hich can cost over $100,000, could be broken. 68 Dirt, dead bugs, bird droppings or w ater spots can impact the vehicle's ability to drive safely.

Av is, w hich has years of experience managing large fleets of rental cars, has been tasked w ith cleaning and refueling the self-driv ing van fleet of Waymo, the self-driving arm of Google's parent company. Avis modified three of its branches in the Phoenix area to tend to the Chrysler Pacifica vans.\"There are special processes that definitely require a lot more care and focus, and you have to clean [the vans] quite often,\"

69 But other self-driving car companies such as Toyota, Aptiv, Drive. AI and Uber described to CNN that they use microfiber cloths along w ith rubbing alcohol, w ater or glass cleaner for manual cleanings.

70 This should allev iate some need for manual cleaning. But because autonomous vehicles can have dozens of sensors, Seeva CEO Diane Lans inger doesn't imagine products like this w ill be able to clean every camera, radar or LIDAR, a laser sensor that most experts see as essential for self-driving vehicles.

IV.Summary Writing

Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own wo rds as f ar as possible.

In one of my earliest memories, I‘m draw ing. I don‘t remember w hat the picture is supposed to be, but I remember the mistake. My marker slips, an unintentional line appears and my lip trembles. The picture has long since disappeared. But that feeling of deep frustration, ev en shame, stays w ith me.

That‘s the thing about perfectionism, a crucially self -defeating w ay to move through the w orld. It makes you better at your career and relationships and life in general.Cu lturally, w e often see perfectionism as a positive.

But the disadvantage of perfectionism isn‘t just that it holds you back from being your most successful, productive self. Perfectionistic tendencies have been linked to a laundry list of clinical issues: depression and anxiety (even in children), self -harm, social anxiety disorder, eating disorders, and most damaging of all, suicide.

―Based upon the 60-odd studies that w e‘ve done, w e think that‘s a misunderstanding,‖ says York St John University‘s Hill. ―Factors often labeled ‗healthy‘ perfectionism, like striving for excellence, aren‘t actually perfectionism at all. They‘re just conscientiousness(尽职尽责)– which explains w hy people w ith those tendencies often have different outcomes in studies. Perfectionism isn‘t defined by w orking hard or setting high goals. It‘s that critical inner voice.‖

Take the student w ho w orks hard and gets a poor mark. If she tells herself: ―I‘m disappointed, but it‘s okay; I‘m still a good person overall,‖ that‘s healthy. If the message is: ―I‘m a failure. I‘m not good enough,‖ that‘s perfectionism.

Perfectionists can make smooth sailing into a storm, a brief ill w ind into a category -five hurricane. Eventually, the behaviours perfectionists adapt, actually, do make them more likely to

10

fail.
